Roadragecowboy aka Marius Anderson took sometime out from the epic journey around Britain’s coastline aboard a trusty Massey Ferguson 35x
to share with countryshows.com the path that brought them here—and the powerful reasons driving the adventure.
What was the inspiration behind the coastal route?
To the best of our knowledge, it’s something that hasn’t been done before. Everyone seems to do LEJOG (Land’s End to John o’ Groats). I had considered doing it on my motorcycle, but it would have been over too quickly. So, I thought outside the box and decided to do it on a tractor.
Why did you choose the Massey Ferguson 35x for the journey, and what was involved in restoring it?
We chose the Massey Ferguson because it’s an icon of its time—reliable, simple, and impressively fuel-efficient (currently averaging around 24 mpg on the road). I approached my pal Martin, who I knew had a “small” collection of tractors. He had a 35X in need of some TLC, so we set to work. The mechanical work—engine rebuild, new pistons, liners, head work, etc.—was all carried out by me and funded by Martin. He also rebuilt and rebushed the front axle, handled much of the external work, and funded that as well.
A close friend of Martin’s, Philip MacDonald, did the paintwork. This whole project couldn’t have happened without the help of Martin’s mates. We also fitted oversized wheels—32” tubeless radials instead of the standard 28”—which allowed us to reduce the RPMs and maintain a reasonable road speed.
To avoid overheating the hydraulic oil from constant use of the lift, we engineered a drawbar setup. This allowed us to keep the lift inactive most days.
The box you see on the back in the photos on social media carries 200 litres of diesel, spare tubes, tools, a pump, puncture repair kits, tent, clothes, and more.
Each of the charities holds personal significance—could you share a bit about how they connect to your lives or experiences?
The charities we’re supporting are deeply personal to both Martin and me:
Cancer Research UK
I’m a cancer survivor myself, and Martin and I also lost a very close friend to the disease about 30 years ago. It still chokes us up to this day. Back then, there wasn’t enough known to help our friend. That’s why we believe if people like us don’t give our time and effort, and if generous people don’t donate in response, progress in finding cures would be far slower. So far, we’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity we’ve received.
My Name’5 Doddie Foundation
This one is close to Martin’s heart. His wife lost her life to MND. One evening, while we were rebuilding the tractor, Elizabeth was telling us how terrible it was to watch someone suffer through it. That conversation solidified our choice to support this foundation in the hope that our efforts help advance research and treatment.
SANE
Both Martin and I come from rural backgrounds. We’ve seen the devastating impact mental health issues can have on families in these communities. Knowing that our fundraising might help someone in their darkest moment is a huge motivation for us.
RSABI (RABI in England and Wales)
Farming life is often isolated. Many couples work together day in and day out, sometimes without speaking to anyone else for days. When one partner is lost, RSABI/RABI step in with vital support—emotional, financial, and practical. Martin had a lovely experience with RSABI when they helped his mother in a time of real need. That stuck with us.
After many evenings in Martin’s workshop, these charities stood out as the right ones for us to support.
But this journey is far bigger than just the two of us. Behind the scenes are “The Drifters”—our social media and support team, Ashley and Andrew—who’ve given (and continue to give) far more time than any of us imagined would be needed. Without them, none of this would have gotten off the ground.
So please, please, please consider donating. Every bit of support goes a long way.
How can people across the UK get involved—whether donating, meeting you along the way, or helping to share your story?
People can support us not just by donating, but also by helping to spread the word. Share any photos you’ve taken of the Road Rage Cowboy, follow and share our journey on social media, and tell others about what we’re doing and why. Every bit of awareness raised for the charities we’re supporting makes a real difference.
