Farming is at the heart of our countryside. It shapes the landscapes we enjoy, the food we eat, and the rural communities many of us visit throughout the year. But behind the fields, the livestock rings and the show tents are real people working in one of the most demanding and unpredictable professions in the UK.
Long hours, financial pressure, isolation, weather extremes and the responsibility of caring for animals can all take a toll. Many farmers work alone. Many feel they have to stay strong for everyone else. And for a long time, talking about mental health in agriculture simply wasn’t something people felt able to do.
Just Talk Agriculture was created to change that.
Founded by people within the farming community, the project encourages open, honest conversations about mental health. It gives farmers and rural workers a safe place to talk, to listen, and to share experiences without judgement. Sometimes it’s a message. Sometimes it’s a chat. Sometimes it’s simply knowing that someone else understands.
Their message is simple but powerful: you don’t have to struggle on your own.
Just Talk Agriculture raises awareness through social media, events, and community outreach, helping to break the silence that has surrounded mental health in farming for far too long. They highlight real stories, real challenges and real moments of support — reminding people that reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.
As we mark Mental Health Awareness Week, it’s a timely reminder that the countryside is full of strong, capable people who also deserve space, understanding and support. Whether you work the land, support those who do, or simply care about rural life, conversations like these matter.
